Verification Background Check: Screen Your Employee

If you wish to find out why are verification background checks so important to contribute towards a better hiring practice, read on…

For long, hiring has been blamed as the launching point of people quitting the organization or if any employee of the organization commits a fraudulent activity. Though performance management of the organization takes its share, it is prudent enough that hiring takes a majority of the blame. Especially, if you look at the fact that enough hiring precautions were not taken when selecting the employee. This is where it is so important for you to do a Verification Background Check on your employee. Considering the fact that these checks reveal lot of facts about the employee in terms of what he has indicated on his resume and what transpires during his interview with you, Verification Background Checks are indeed a critical element to good hiring.

Verification background checks can be done on an employee to get the following facts:

  • Past Employment Verification - All the employers as quoted by the candidate on his resume are contacted and verified. The employers are generally asked questions on the candidate's tenure of work, his performance and skills and weaknesses.

  • Credential Verification - All the employees credentials which are mentioned on the resume by the candidate are checked. For example, if a candidate says he has done a course in MCSE from Arizona Learning Institute, AZ, it is immediately checked with the concerned institute to see if the candidate has indeed done the course and he is not faking the information.

  • Criminal Record Verification - All state, local and federal databases are checked to see if the data provided by the candidate is true. An exceptional 0.5% of the candidates appearing for an interview reveal during the interview itself that they have a criminal history and provide details. With statistics revealing that close to 30% of the candidates do not reveal their criminal history or misrepresent it, criminal background checks assume more importance than before.

It is extremely important that we realize that a Verification Background Check is done primarily to check the data provided by your candidate to you. It will be imprudent of you to get up from the bed and decide that you wish to do a check on a candidate. Though your decision may be correct, but it is extremely important to look at your hiring process before you jump on to do the Background check.

It is beneficial to screen your candidates. No one stops you. Just ensure that you do not get on the wrong side of the law in doing so.
