Federal Background Check

Federal Background Check: Your National Level Background Check

Imagine your name being searched in databases of the Federal Bureau of Investigation to see if you have been convicted of a crime or not. The concept of Federal Background check picked up tempo after the 9/11 disasters. This was the time that America took a very constructive step in getting people their job. Just to ensure that the job they would wish a candidate to take over is safe and the candidate does not have a criminal record, Federal Background Check is done.

The whole process of a Federal Background Check starts by getting your fingerprints and transferring them for a search in the national database for criminals. Your fingerprints are searched to see if they are found as against a criminal record on the database. The other function to check on the Federal check is citizenship. This check is also done to see if any candidate has fudged his citizenship papers to get the job. These checks are especially important in security-sensitive jobs where if the job is done by someone who is not background-verified, be rest assured that he is sure to endanger many other lives too.

And it is not only the federal law-governing agency which does this. The Federal Aviation Administration has actively taken cue and has been giving out conviction reports for employees who have been convicted of crimes. Pretty recently, I heard of a report where the FAA has given out 25 odd felony convictions which could disable employees to work on secured areas related to the airline industry. What this means that a person would be fingerprinted even in case of arrest on a small issue. The fact that even if you are convicted of you are having a small argument with your wife, you will be fingerprinted and your record will go into the list of the national database for criminal records. Imagine if this person had to apply for the job of a pilot. In all probabilities, he will be disqualified because of the negative federal check report.

All this means that there will be long periods of dormancy before a job is offered to the candidate for which he has applied. Even with the advent of plenty of online databases which vow to get these criminal checks done fast, the federal database background check will indeed take time for one check to over. This is especially considering the volume of records which it needs to scan and search for the match.

This is typically a double-edged sword. If employers take information from the federal report which is just not related to the job profile, they would almost lose out on a potentially good resource. And if they do not do the Federal Background Check, they may err on the wrong side of the law.

For now, employers are treading a very cautious path…
