Employee Background Check: 'Check' Your Employees Before They Join

Hiring new employees adds value to a company when it is done properly. Hiring adds a lot of value to the organizational goals. After all, it is hiring that brings in people to meet the demand as the company as the company expands. It is hiring which replaces employees, keeping the company's numbers constant in cases of attrition. With good hiring practices adding value to the company, adding background checks to the hiring system can ensure that you have hired the right candidate for your company. Employee Background check ensures that background checks are conducted for every employee who wishes to join the company. Your perspective new employee seems to meet all criteria, he just needs to pass the employee background check, the last test on his way to grabbing the coveted offer letter.

Employee Background checks are extremely sensitive in their nature, and it is this sensitivity and confidentiality that allows me to tell you the below mentioned two points:

  • Honesty: More than employees being honest in their curriculum vitae, third party agencies/companies who do employee background checks need to be honest. A company utilizes the services of a 3rd party agency because they believe that they have the expertise to do the background checks. A couple of wrong moves may result in you getting a candidate hired in a company, but that decision may prove extremely troublesome or expensive for the company.

  • Sensitivity: Employee background checks contain data which must only be revealed to the employer. Simple reason, it was the employer who requested for the employee background check and it is only he who must know what the results are. After all, it is he who paid for the employee background check and has the signed release authorizing it from the employee.

Most of the 3rd party agencies/companies use online databases which contains records like any driving offences committed by the candidate, any cases pending in the Court of Law etc. My recommendation to all those agencies who rely only on online data coalition from these databases is to have a second string of checks like calling up different entities and verifying the information. This will provide the most accurate data in terms of employee background checks. In cases where employee background checks hold very high importance, like in the banking, security, care-taking sectors, the entities doing the employee background checks must be extremely careful.

For example, a candidate may have been convicted of assaulting an elderly person. If the candidate applies for a position which involves taking care of the elderly person, he may in all probability , fail the background check, if done properly. To eliminate any discrepancies in the employee background checks, a lot of companies are including employee background checks as one of the Key Role Areas for the Human Resources Department.

Remember, as a company, it is extremely important for you to have every employee go through a background check. The more rigorous the check is, the better for you.
