Business Background Check: Check Whether Your Business Partner Is Worth A Business Relationship

Business background checks are equally important as employee or employer background checks. After all, by doing a business background check, you check the credentials of your business partner with whom you may want to forge a business relationship. It is in your rights to know if he is credible enough to do business with.

Business background checks are slightly more complex and technical than an employee background check. In a typical business background check, below mentioned points are checked (This is not the complete list, it is just an indicator):

  • Bankruptcies: Has the company or the business partner ever filed for bankruptcy? If he has, in all probabilities, he may not be a partner that you can trust with your financial dealings.

  • Tax Liens: Does he have any delinquent taxes to be paid to the government against his real estate property? If the partner has not paid his taxes regularly, he is not responsible to the local government.

  • Claims Civil Judgment: Does he have any civil claims against him in the Court of Law? Any claims indicate that people do not have faith in the business partner and have filed for claims.

  • Property Ownership and Value: This is to check what is your business partner's real estate properties are and how much is the assessed value of the real estate property. Your business partner's assets can be judged in a very smart manner by doing this check.

With the industry re-inventing itself towards process re-engineering, a lot of companies are checking the business processes of their prospective business partners. In today's world, lot of us believe that in difficult times for a business, it is its processes which take it forward.

The objective is not to weed out prospective business partners who are talented. The objective of this exercise is to ensure that the people whom you select for doing business with are credible enough to do that. At the end of the day, if they are the people who will be paying for the services which you offer, you have all rights to know more details about them.

As other background checks, there are some rules and regulations which govern business background checks. Needless to say, the consent of the business owner must be sought. Today, a lot of companies are doing this in a covert manner, but that is not the legal way to go about a business background check.

It is important that you check the background of your business partner. He may be skilled enough to do business with you. He may have the talent. But really, he may not be credible enough if he has defaulted on his taxes..
